The Essential Living Foods Difference
Purity & Consistency
Our mushroom powders are cultivated in California under strict HACCP aseptic protocol and are certified Kosher and Organic. Many suppliers can't guarantee the genetics or even the purity of what they are selling. Based on our source's decades of experience cultivating wide varieties of mushrooms for culinary and medicinal uses, we are able to assure a consistent product, with minimal variation from batch to batch, and recent ribosomal DNA testing ensures the precise strain of mushroom you're seeking.
Mushroom vs. Mycelium
90% of the mushroom's life cycle is spent underground in the vegetative or "mycelial" stage. The mycelium contains extracellular compounds and metabolites that function to promote the longevity and vitality of the living mushroom. This is why our mushroom powders are made exclusively from mycelial biomass.
NOT a Chemical Isolate
Plenty of "medicinal mushroom" supplement makers produce highly concentrated extracts with "guaranteed potency," all without any clinical trials to ensure efficacy or even safety. Fungi are primarily used as adaptogens, or biological response modulators, i.e. they work by way of feedback mechanisms. Too much of one isolate or another imbalances the synergistic effects found in the whole food product, and may close a physiological feedback loop, yielding unintended consequences that could compromise one's health. This is why our mushroom powders are exclusively whole food supplements, not chemical isolates.
Processing
All mushrooms require a growing medium or "substrate." We exclusively use certified organic brown rice.
A 100% aseptic environment are crucial to the cultivation of pure, healthy mushrooms, so the growing chambers and the rice are sterilized at 250 F. Then the growing medium is inoculated with pure mushroom spawns. This is one of the most crucial steps in creating a high quality final product. Our mushroom spawns are continually lab- tested and carefully nurtured and selected in order to ensure a vigorous and beneficial strain. Once the spawn have germinated, the mycelial biomass is harvested and dehydrated BELOW 120 F (to protect beneficial compounds from heat and oxidation) then pulverized into a homogenous powder.
Finally, samples undergo rigorous microbial testing before being packaged and shipped to our warehouse for delivery to you!
Reishi Strain Ensured
Recently, due to rampant uncertainty in the international medicinal mushroom supply chain, high- end cultivators began using ribosomal DNA testing to ensure the accuracy of their spores. As expected from such an exacting source, our supplier confirmed that their strain of Reishi was definitely Ganoderma lucidum, the revered Reishi mushroom.
Nutrition
Reishi has been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years as a therapeutic healing mushroom. Reishi is an amazing nutritional mushroom, loaded with B vitamins, amino acids, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, and Iron. It also contains sterols, which are an important precursor to substances such as vitamin D. Reishi contains potent phytochemicals called ganoderic acids (a type of triterpene). In addition to triterpines, Reishi provides polysaccharides such as beta-glucan.
