Get clean with Brett!  Take the one-week challenge during the first week of January 2012 and participate in Brett's Raw Vegan Superfood Cleanse.  Keep up with him on Facebook and Twitter to share recipes, stories and results.

Here’s how to do the cleanse:

In the morning, make yourself a smoothie:

1-2 tablespooons of Superfood Smoothie mix

1 teaspoon of Spirulina

1 teaspoon – 1 tablespoon of Cacao Nibs (these have a stimulating effect like caffeine so leave them out if you’re having a smoothie in the afternoon or evening)

1-2 tablespoons of Chia Seeds

Combine these ingredients in a blender with:

-organic almond milk or  hemp milk (or any other milk substitute.  I don’t recommend soy milk or real milk.  Processed soy is really hard on digestion and most people are allergic to soy, whether they know it or not.  The same goes for dairy)

* I usually use spring water instead of almond milk.  Good clean water is nature’s best drink, but most people like the creamy taste of almond milk, so that’s why I put it above.  But please feel free to just use water.

If you want to get creative, you can also add:

-organic fruit:  I recommend bananas and/or blueberries.

-organic veggies: I recommend kale or spinach

Throughout the rest of the day, keep the cleanse in mind as you choose what foods to eat.  Every meal and snack is an opportunity to give ourselves the nutrition we crave to have a healthy body, mind and spirit.  Have a huge salad and veggies for lunch.  Or fruit.  For dinner have fish instead of meat.  Or don’t eat flesh at all.  Plenty of vegetarian food is hearty and filling.  Eat whole grains instead of pasta or pizza.  Most people are allergic to wheat, so try other grains like rice and quinoa.  Try and cut out dairy and refined sugars.  Eat foods that are whole, not processed.  Drink lots of water.  Cut back on or cut out caffeine if you can.

If you want, you can substitute lunch or dinner with another smoothie!

I’m excited to cleanse with you!

Brett

Chia Seeds

Chia is one of the most revered superfoods of the ancients (along with cacao, quinoa, maca, and others).  Chia was a major staple crop for the Aztec, and you may have heard about Aztec foot-messengers and warriors traveling great distances carrying only a small pouch of Chia for their daily nutrition.

Incredibly rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and high in protein, fiber, antioxidants and minerals, the tiny Chia seed is an incredible nutritional powerhouse.

Mix chia in water with lemon or lime juice and a little coconut sugar to make the classic Mexican drink known as "chia fresca." Or simply blend a few spoonfuls into your morning smoothie.

Chia can also be ground into flour and added to baking recipes, so versatile, nutritious, a true Superfood!

Spirulina Powder

A power food of the ancient Aztec empire, this nutrient-dense algae is one of the world’s richest sources of plant-based protein. Spirulina alone is a complete protein with all 8 essential amino acids.  It’s also packed with beneficial phytonutrients including detoxifying chlorophyll, essential B vitamins and trace minerals.

Spirulina’s rich emerald color comes from phycopigments (including chlorophyll and beta carotene) that are known to possess detoxifying and antioxidant effects.

Add a scoop to smoothies for a true energy elixir, or make a supercharged green salad dressing!

When Brett heads out on tour he takes along a supply of Essential Living Foods Superfoods (like maca, cacao and gojis) to keep him going in between gigs.
